Bryan P Croxen Although I like him, I always thought Jimmy Page was overrated as a player when there were many other players during his time that were much better that didn't get as much coverage as he did. Also, The Edge, who was only good at making guitar tones, his playing was as simple as Kurt Cobain's playing.
Lew Asprey How is kirk hammett underated. 😂😂
Brad Spencer Most of you who believe Clapton, Richards and Slash are overrated probably put batteries in your pickups and use distortion pedals every time you play.
Lorenz Eyssen Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Slash. Who is good, who is bad. If a guy can play the Hendrix stuff (and many guys can), but Hendrix (If he would be alive) wasn't able to play the guy's stuff, the guy is probably better. I guess that Johnny Hiland could play and kind of Riff and Solo Keith Richard ever played but Keith Richards wouldn't be able to play just one chicken-picking Lick from Johnny Hiland. Hendrix, Richards and Clapton and some other guys mighty be Influencal but better players are several other guys.
Scott Brown People are saying Clapton r u serious it’s not that matter of how he plays it’s how he writes he’s a legend
Mark Dodsworth ⬇️ this guy ⬇️
Xavier Thomas Wisowaty Kirk hammett
HeXx Henderson Me!!!
Ken Pink Brillinger I really don’t think that way . I believe every Musician is unique . I’m glad there is so much diversity . I’ve never said to anyone that music blows !!! I always say if it makes you happy then it’s Great . Just because I might not like it doesn’t mean it’s bad . It’s just not my taste .
Mike Wiseman As a guitar player who doesn't consider myself good but has learned that I have to play at least 6 or 8 hours a day to accomplish my own goals as a guitar player, I've learned that a person has to practice a long time just to do what they do. Every guitar player can't go imitating everybody else or they'll never find a style and most will never even become good imitators of someone else. I don't think it's fair to compare most guitarists this way. They're playing songs and they're playing them in their own unique way most of the time so I'm not going to say anybody is underrated. It's not an easy job.
Jhullian Donawa Why has guitar playing become more about "technical ability and speed" than actual music making? This thread proves it right here. A guy like Tom Petty is a creative genius but only uses a few guitar chords. IMO, if a guy is overrated, it's Seth Petrucci. A guy who is super technical, but whose music always lacks "feel" or relatability.
William Edward Jimmy Page is the only guitarist who night after night seemed to push his playing beyond his limits. Yes, sometimes he failed. When he succeeded though, my god it was good. It's hard to call a guitarist who was key to shaping the way the electric guitar is played overrated (in rock that is). Overrated guitarists are the players who are all technique and no substance. Like Steve Vai or any metal guitarists. *disclaimer, Page is my all time favourite
BJ Parker Clearly none of your opinions matter. Talk all the shit you want, every axeman on here has/has been a part of selling millions of records. Tell me, what have you all contributed to the rock world?
Scott Harris Sorry but here my two cents. What a F@$€ing elitist question and response legends! I guess all those years of practice mean nothing. I’ve been playing 40+ years. About as incredibly average as it comes. And to sit there and say let’s talk 💩 about someone who does a much better job at guitar than I will ever do! I guess that’s why he’s up there and you....are sitting in the pit waiting for a pick to be tossed out. Pick a better topic and stop being a testosterone fueled guitar POS like I see in the stores. Geez.
Danny Magalhaes In my opinion this is stupid. As a guitarist, I admire every name I’ve seen here and I can find examples of each that are awesome
Matthew Shaker Eddie Van Halen. Dudes good and all, but hes always top 2 or 3 in like every stupid top 10 guitarist list of all time.
Paul Oakley Surely they only play in the style of the songs written. How can you say he's better than him and so on. Techniques only come in your preferred style of music. Kirk Hammett would play different in Bon Jovi as would Richie Sambora in Metallica.
Jan Lipski I would like to say Ted Nugent but he's not a guitarist so we can't include him here. This a difficult category as there are so many who qualify for that title. But after a lot of thought I consider Pete Townsend the most over rated guitarist in rock history.
Andreas Groeber Carlos Santana for me. Same boring pentatonic / blues scale for decades, bad intonation, ear-offending phrasing.
Steve Urquhart This is a moot question, obviously depends on such variants as ,age, taste in music, even where you were born,or were brought up. A neverending debate. Each to their own taste, that's why we have such a diverse spectrum of music, and a good thing too.
Wade Weatherby None of them. They all play what they like to play and what their fans want to hear. I mean seriously this one guitarist may be amazing but he also may be someone many fans don't want to listen to. This other guitarist may not be as good but writes songs or is apart of songs that they do want to listen to all the time. You can call a guy overrated but there are to many variables in playing guitar to pick the best.
Edward Ambrosius Have admit that I am not a big fan of Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen. I feel they over play, solo after 25 minute solo! Please Jimmy Page was the best in his generation. He played on many early to mid 60's recordings that are now part of our musical DNA!
Mark Kingsley In the end you're only as good as what you write and come up with cheap copy players or a diamond dozen guys coming out of Berklee school of music could play Yngwie Malmsteen backwards and forwards who cares whether they written probably nothing but s***
Howard Ross What a stupid question, it's all subjective, no fact going on here, geez. Why perpetuate negativity. Kirk has a long and successful career, over-rated? Whatever.
Garry Daniell Each to their own. You can go around any street corner and there will be half a dozen young kids that can play the shit out of a guitar, however , the secret is to create a "sound" or a "style" that is yours and stake your claim on it. Look at chuck berry, an absolute innovator. Not a great singer, not a great guitar soloist, but boy one of the greatest ever. Its all very subjective. After all that,.......gene Simmons. Great tongue, shit guitarist.
